Island Estates, Clearwater: A Host Guide to the Waterfront Island

The short version

Island Estates is a residential island sitting in Clearwater Harbor, in the water between the Clearwater mainland and Clearwater Beach, linked to both by causeways. It is mostly waterfront homes with canals and boat access, and it is where the Clearwater Marine Aquarium lives. It is also where our one long stay place, Dolphin Point, sits. If Avalon is the quiet inland base a short drive from the sand, Island Estates trades that inland setting for the water: you are surrounded by canals and bay, still about the same short drive to the beach, with walking, biking, or the trolley as extra ways to get there. Where Island Estates actually is

Picture three pieces: the Clearwater mainland to the east, Clearwater Beach on the barrier island to the west, and the Gulf beyond that. Island Estates sits in the harbor between the first two, reached by causeway. That geography is the whole appeal. You are surrounded by water, with bay views, canals, and the dolphin sightings the Dolphin Point listing is named for, and the beach is a short drive over the causeway, with walking, biking, or the trolley as options too.

It is a residential community rather than a resort strip. The hard anchor that tells you exactly where it is: the Clearwater Marine Aquarium is on the island, at 249 Windward Passage, Clearwater FL 33767 (Clearwater Marine Aquarium).

What is on the island, and how close things are

We keep the times below honest. Like our Avalon condos, Island Estates sits roughly a 10 to 15 minute drive from Clearwater Beach, and the Dolphin Point listing also describes reaching the beach on foot, by bike, or by trolley, so we frame those as options rather than inventing a precise walk time we have not measured. The anchored facts, like the aquarium being on the island, are certain.

A note on the airports: St. Pete Clearwater (PIE) is the closer airport, on SR 686 about four miles north of St. Petersburg, with the Grouper Airport Express running to Clearwater Beach from about $8 one way (fly2pie.com, check current). Tampa (TPA) is roughly 21 miles out via the Courtney Campbell Causeway, usually somewhere around 35 to 45 minutes depending on traffic. We keep both as approximate because we have not clocked the exact door to gate time from the island.

The Clearwater Marine Aquarium, in the neighborhood

The single best known thing on Island Estates is the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, and it is a genuinely useful thing to have a few minutes from where you are staying. It is a working marine rescue and rehabilitation center, once home to Winter from the film Dolphin Tale and now caring for other rescued dolphins including Hope, plus sea turtles, otters, and stingrays. It is open 10am to 5pm daily, with last entry 30 minutes before close (Clearwater Marine Aquarium, check current).

Admission, at time of writing, runs roughly as below. Treat these as changeable: the aquarium notes prices are subject to change, seasonal rates may apply, and online prices can differ from the gate, so check current before you go.

Getting to the beach: car, bike, or trolley

From Island Estates the beach is a short drive, and the Dolphin Point listing also describes reaching it on foot, by bike, or by trolley, so you have options beyond the car. We will not put a fixed walk time on it because we have not measured it, but the sand is close, not a project.

Once you are moving around the coast, the Jolley Trolley runs the beach route about every 30 minutes, one way cash fare $2.25, reduced $1.10 for seniors 65 plus and others with ID, and free for children eight and under. It runs seven days a week, Sunday to Thursday until 10:18pm and Friday to Saturday until 11:48pm on the seasonal schedule (Clearwater Jolley Trolley, check current). When you do get to the beach, the free Sunsets at Pier 60 festival runs nightly, year round, from about two hours before to two hours after sunset, with 30 plus artisan stalls and street performers (check current, since times shift with the sunset). And a short drive south, Sand Key Park is a calmer 95 acre county beach with showers, changing rooms, and a cafe, parking about $6 a day, open 7am to sunset (check current).

Who Dolphin Point on the island suits

Dolphin Point is our long stay place, a one bedroom on the water that sleeps up to six, with a full kitchen, a real workspace, and fast WiFi, on grounds that share a heated saltwater pool. The full spec sheet and house rules live on the property page.

It suits a different traveler than the Avalon condos:

• Long, extended stays. This is a long-stay rental, not a three night beach dash, so it fits people settling in on the water for an extended stretch rather than a quick trip.
• Anyone who wants the water at the door. Canals, bay views, and dolphin sightings are the draw, with the beach a short drive, or a walk, bike, or trolley, away.
• Remote work stays. Fast WiFi and a real workspace make a longer booking workable.
