A First Timer’s Guide to Clearwater Beach, From a Local Host

Clearwater Beach sits on the Gulf coast of Florida, a barrier island linked to the mainland and to Island Estates by causeways. If this is your first trip, the useful thing to know up front is that “Clearwater Beach” and “Clearwater” are not the same place: the beach is the island, and a lot of the good value stays, including our two Avalon condos, are a short drive inland rather than on the sand. This guide covers the four decisions a first timer actually makes, where to stay, when to come, how to get around, and what to do, and each one links to a deeper guide if you want the detail.

We are Mike and Gina, and between us and Anna, who manages two of the units day to day, we run three places here: two short stay condos at the gated Avalon complex and a waterfront one-bedroom at Island Estates. So the honest framing below is the same one we give our own guests.

Where to stay: beachfront or a short drive

This is the first real choice, and it is a genuine tradeoff rather than a right answer.

Beachfront means you walk to the sand and pay for it, both in nightly rate and in a busier, noisier setting. If your trip is short and the beach is the whole point, that premium can be worth it.

Inland means a short drive to the coast in exchange for more space, a quieter base, free parking, and better value. Our two short stay condos are in the gated Avalon complex, about 3.5 miles from Clearwater Beach, which is roughly a 10 to 15 minute drive. To be clear, that is a drive, not a walk to the sand. Each condo is a two-bedroom that sleeps six, with a full kitchen, an in-unit washer and dryer, and access to a heated saltwater pool open year round, a fitness center, and free parking. One honest access note: our Oasis Dream apartment is on the third floor with stairs and no elevator, so tell us first if that is a concern.

Our third place, Dolphin Point, is the only waterfront one, a one-bedroom on Island Estates with bay and canal views, and it is set up for long stays rather than a weekend. When to come

Weather here is warm most of the year, and the real variables are crowds, rain, and Gulf water temperature. The month by month picture below uses local climate normals, so treat the crowd and rain notes as seasonal patterns rather than guarantees.

Two things every first timer should factor in:

• Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, with the statistical peak around September 10 (NOAA National Hurricane Center). Most trips in this window are fine, but it is worth watching the forecast and understanding your cancellation terms before you book.
• Red tide is a naturally occurring algae that comes and goes, and it can affect the water and air on some days and not others. Never trust a fixed claim about it: check the live FWC status map and the Pinellas beach conditions page, or call the hotline on 866-300-9399, close to your trip.

Getting around

If you stay inland, a car is the easy default: you will want it for groceries, day trips, and the run to the beach. Park in the public beach lots, which are pay by plate and take kiosks, ParkMobile, or pay by text; the parking and driving detail is in our getting to the beach guide.

Once you are at the coast, or if you would rather not drive every day, the Jolley Trolley covers the beach and runs from Clearwater Beach up to Tarpon Springs. One way cash fare is $2.25, reduced $1.10 for seniors, riders with a disability, and students with ID, and it is free for children eight and under. The beach route runs about every 30 minutes, seasonally Sunday to Thursday until roughly 10:18pm and Friday to Saturday later (fares and schedule, check current, cash and exact change).

On airports, St. Pete Clearwater (PIE) is the closer, smaller option, roughly 15 minutes from Avalon, and Tampa (TPA) is the larger airport, roughly a 30 to 35 minute drive.

Top things to do

You will not run out of options, but here is what we point first timers to:

• Sunsets at Pier 60. A free nightly festival on the beach, year round, running about two hours before to two hours after sunset, with 30 plus artisan stalls and street performers (Sunsets at Pier 60, check current times, since they shift with the sunset).
• Clearwater Marine Aquarium. A working marine rescue and rehabilitation center at 249 Windward Passage on Island Estates, a short drive from the beach, open 10am to 5pm daily with last entry 30 minutes before close. Admission is about $41.95 for adults 12 plus, $32.95 for children 3 to 11, $39.95 for seniors 65 plus, and free for ages 2 and under (CMA, check current).
• Caladesi and Honeymoon Islands. For a quieter, wilder beach, drive about 20 minutes north to Honeymoon Island State Park ($8 per vehicle, open 8am to sundown, Florida State Parks), then take the ferry across to boat-access-only Caladesi Island, about $20 round trip for ages 13 plus and $10 for ages 6 to 12, plus the park entry (Caladesi Ferry, check current). Sand Key Park is a calmer, closer county beach with showers and a cafe, parking about $6 a day (Pinellas County).
• On the water. Dolphin-watching and sunset cruises, a pirate ship, and kayak, paddleboard, and jet ski rentals all run from the marina near the beach.
